EDMONTON, AB – The 2014 Thoroughbred season gets underway at Northlands Park this weekend. Opening weekend will feature 17 races with one of Canada’s leading jockeys and Sovereign Award finalist, Rico Walcott, back to defend his 2013 jockey title. Leading 2013 trainer Dale Saunders will be in tough competition this season as trainers Greg Tracy, Tim Rycroft and Joan Petrowski all vie for the training title. Many of the leading horses from the 2013 season are back to compete including multiple stakes winner Commander and last year’s Canadian Derby hopeful For Cash.

Northlands Park Racetrack and Casino has been the destination for the best horse racing in Edmonton since 1882. The venue also features a casino which boasts over 550 slot and gaming machines as well as Alberta’s only electronic table games pit “The Pit”. Northlands Park is also pleased to offer unique dining experiences. Colours Restaurant features 148 tables capable of seating 660 guests and is the only tiered restaurant in Edmonton. In addition to hosting an array of entertainment options, the annual Canadian Derby continues to be the social event of the season. The 85th running of the Canadian Derby will take place on August 16, 2014.
As the pinnacle event of the Thoroughbred season, tickets to the Canadian Derby are on-sale on May 2, 2014 and include new ticketed entertainment offerings including the Infield Patio Party, VIP Tent Experience, Racing Experience and Grandstand Experience.
